Synopsis: A recent survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) reveals that business school aspirants in 2025 are increasingly favoring in-country programs, particularly in India, due to cost considerations and a heightened focus on return on investment (ROI). |

In 2025, a significant shift is observed among business school aspirants who are prioritizing domestic educational opportunities over international ones. The GMAC’s annual survey highlights that candidates are now more inclined towards programs offering practical AI training and strategic thinking skills, essential for real-world problem-solving.
The traditional MBA continues to be the preferred choice for over half of the global candidates, with India, Canada, and Latin America remaining strongholds. However, there’s a noticeable trend among Indian students showing a preference for studying within the country. This inclination is attributed to the escalating costs of overseas education, restrictive visa policies, and the desire for better ROI.
Catherine Duggan, Director of the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business and Chair-Elect of the GMAC Board, notes, “As the global economy becomes increasingly uncertain, we’re seeing candidates from around the world seeking out value for money, unique perspectives, and hands-on experience with complex problems they can gain by studying in regions with young populations and fast-growing, dynamic markets.”
Additionally, there’s a growing interest in specialized business master’s degrees, especially among pre-experience students and professionals over 30. These shorter, focused programs are appealing to those looking to pivot their careers or specialize in specific fields. Martin Boehm, Executive Vice President and Global Dean at Hult International Business School and a GMAC board director, emphasizes that such programs are ideal for seasoned professionals seeking career transitions.
The survey also indicates a resurgence in demand for in-person programs, with candidates valuing face-to-face learning experiences post-pandemic. Overall, the current economic climate and evolving career aspirations are influencing candidates to make more calculated decisions regarding their business education paths.
